Summer Palace in Winter

Tuesday afternoon we made a trip to the Summer Palace. We have been several times to the Summer Palace in different seasons, but we wanted to see what it was like in the winter. Since we have had such freezing cold temperatures for a sustained length of time, Mark thought this would be a good time to experience an adventure on the ice. Due to a mix-up on understanding which bus stop to get off at, we actually entered the park from a new direction and got to see a different area of the park. The park is so huge we could explore a different section each time we go.

This buildings' painting was in especially beautiful condition. Much of the detailed artwork on the ancient buildings shows its age by having lost detail and vibrancy.

Overlooking one part of the Haidian District where we live.
Notice the sign and the activity. Typical!

The higher we climber, the colder we felt.
Walking on water - frozen water. The staff indicated the ice measured about 20cm thick.
Our ice adventure.
This proved harder than it looked as the wheels never had a really good grip on the ice.

I wanted a picture of the bridge from this perspective so we walked from one side of the lake to here then turned left to walk back to shore. Notice the white streak to Mark's left. A guard (not pictured) forbade us to venture further. I think that white streak meant the ice was weaker in that area.

People Stories - Fernando & Mohammed

Tuesday night we had several friends over to share dinner. We originally planned dinner with Melissa, then Fernando asked if we could have dinner with him and his friend Mohammed. So we just had them all over together. Melissa, a sister from Texas, has been in BJ for a couple of years teaching English while living with her brother's family. Fernando, a brother from Brazil, first came to China to study Mandarin, then moved to BJ to begin his undergraduate studies. Mohammed, from Yemen, also came to China to learn Mandarin. Fernando & Mohammed were roommates for at least one semester during their Chinese studies. Now Mohammed attends university in a nearby city studying chemical engineering. He came to visit Fernando during the universities' winter break, a time also called Spring Festival.

Tuesday night was a fun, relaxing evening of fellowship, sharing, and laughter. We learned more about Fernando and Mohammed's families, their studies, their lives. After dinner we played several rounds of UNO.

It's a cool story how we originally met Mohammed. Fernando regularly attends BBC and our Guys' Nights so we have gotten to know him. One day he let us know that he had a friend coming to visit so he wouldn't be at BBC that Sunday. That prompted me to pray that Fernando would bring his friend to BBC. Imagine my surprise when I saw them that morning. Fernando told me that on an impulse he said to Mohammed, "Let's go." Mohammed agreed, came, and heard the message from Romans 3, a message that totally lined up with what Fernando had shared with him earlier. They both stayed around afterwards to meet and chat with people. Then to build on the previous conversation, we had a deliberate time of sharing the Truth at dinner. Thanks to technology, we even found a specific verse in Arabic on his phone.

We hope that the seeds that we planted will take root in Mohammed's life.

People Stories - the Hart family

We first met the Hart family when we arrived in BJ in August 2013. They had just arrived from South Africa for the husband to help develop economic relations between China and South Africa.  Like most families anywhere in the world, much of their life revolved around dad’s work, kids’ school & afterschool activities, and mom’s school volunteering & Book studies.

Over the 2½ years they lived here, we saw them grow in the Lord and grow in their family. We grew in our love for this family and appreciate their faithfulness to the Lord. They served the Kingdom in so many ways – teaching children, practicing hospitality, bringing encouragement. Several times Mark traveled to the husband’s work area to meet him for lunch to spend time with him. Several times they hosted us and others in their home, over 2 hours from our apartment.

I remember one time especially during their first year here how they expressed the difficulty in living here and adjusting to life in BJ. Mom wanted to take the kids back to South Africa after one year. Yet God gave them grace, and they ended up staying 2½ years. We shared heartaches and tears as they wrestled with decisions about their kids’ educations and futures. We watched them learn to trust the Lord in hard decisions and how the Lord then opened doors in unexpected ways.

The dad finished his assignment here this past December and the family returned to their home in South Africa. They blessed us and BBC by their love for the Lord and their commitment to Him. Our lives are richer for knowing the Hart family. We pray God’s blessing on them as they re-adjust to living in SA and serving Him there.

People Stories - Musicians from around the world

Jessica

One day early last fall, we met Jessica at BBC. After visiting another international church in BJ for a couple of months, she found BBC and then she continued to worship with us for her remaining time here. She spent about four months here as part of her PhD studies in violin performance, teaching violin to Chinese children and performing in several venues to introduce them to a music company.

It’s always fun to ask people what brought them to BJ. (Speaking of BJ, Jessica earned her undergraduate degree from BJU in Greenville so we enjoyed talking about places around our own town.) During her graduate studies, she met a brother in the US who returned here to start a local music company. Through that connection he encouraged her to come to BJ.  Jessica blessed us with godly friendship and blessed BBC with passionate violin accompaniment. She jumped right in meeting and reaching out to people. For example, we discovered that she spent one Sunday afternoon, after a service and lunch, walking around town with a Mexican gal and a Taiwanese gal who then all ran into other foreigners on the subway. The group of them continued walking together, talking, sharing and generally having a great time. Jessica planted seeds wherever she went and with whomever she met.

Through Jessica, we also recognized how small God’s world is. In conversations, we dropped RB names and she knew them all as she attended an RB church growing up. Then later she told of us some of her very good friends in KY where she lives. She wrote us the story: one day she went hiking with a good friend. She shared about her experience here in BJ and told her friend of us. That friend said “Not Mark & Cheryl??”  Those friends are the grown children of one of Mark’s dad’s partners in Williams, Hatfield, & Stoner in FL. Mark knew the wife many years ago and even visited with them when they drove through Greenville in summer 2014.

Manuel

Through her connections in KY, Jessica introduced Manuel to the music company in BJ and he came over to work for a few months. Manuel traveled from Mexico to share his operatic tenor gifts with Chinese children and adults, teaching them and performing with the music company.

Manuel not only attended BBC when he could, he also participated in a few Guys’ Nights. So fun to see the different countries and personalities represented on any given Guys’ Night.

Ana

After Jessica returned to the US, Manuel and the music company invited Manuel’s girlfriend Ana to share her operatic soprano gifts with the Chinese. Manuel and Ana came from the same opera company in Mexico.

Bernard & Debbie

Bernard & Debbie visited BJ from Australia. For 25 years Bernard (pronounced BUR’ NERD) has sung various tenor roles with a traveling company that performs Phantom of the Opera around the world. They stayed in BJ for 9 weeks with Phantom of the Opera. This believing couple provided lots of encouragement to us and to BBC. They make it a practice that no matter where they are in the world, they find a worshiping body to attend. What devotion and testimony to the Lord! Debbie shared how they are committed to traveling as husband and wife as much as possible and to plug into a body as time allows.  They told us that many of their companions travel without their spouses and also that most of them, even if believers, choose other activities on Sunday.

Bernard leant his musical expertise to BBC by meeting with our regular musicians, leading singing, and gracing us with his own renditions of classical hymns.
So God brought some excellent musicians from around the world to worship with BBC for a short period of time. Mark & I had numerous times of fellowship and laughter with all of these friends, from meals together to just hanging out. We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know people to whom God has given these special gifts and talents.  We rejoice that we built friendships with all of them and pray that seeds of Truth that were sown in new ground will take root and flourish in time.

Pounding the Pavement - BBC moves

Just a quick update before we receive a couple for dinner and premarital counseling tonight.

A few days before we returned to BJ, we were informed that BBC would need to move. The hotel in which we meet will begin renovations at the first of February so our last Sunday is Jan. 31. The hotel gave us about 4 weeks' notice to move, which is actually a lot of time by local standards. Therefore, as soon as we could after arriving, Mark, with others, began searching for a new place. One day last week he and some friends visited about 4 venues; Friday Mark and I re-visited two of those venues and then we walked up and down some streets stopping in at 5 other venues to see what they could offer. We have either called or stopped by many venues in the course of a couple of weeks. Over time several venues eliminated themselves as they couldn't provide the space or cost we need or weren't willing to host BBC. Yesterday, Mark, I and a friend visited the landlord and liaison at our most promising venue to discuss the possibility of us renting their business space on a long-term basis. We had a several-hour discussion about our needs, their requirements and concerns. Not only did we have a productive meeting, we came away feeling very positive about the possibility. If nothing else, we made some new friends.

We now have approx. two weeks in which to secure a new venue for BBC. We attempt to balance cost, suitability, environment, and potential for growth and outreach.  As you think of BBC, please petition the Father for wisdom and success in this venture.
